Morning Surf

Hello out there,

Durban is probably one of the most overlooked cities in South Africa. Since it is pretty far away from the main destinations Cape Town and Johannesburg, it is not as touristy and therefore one of the best places to discover the South African way of living. Especially on the several miles long promenade, you can perfectly experience how rich and poor enjoy the sun, ocean and their life. Therefore it was the place we went to every day during our stay in town.

This was also due to the fact, that we found a great place to have breakfast right on the promenade. From a surf instructor, we got the recommendation to try out the surf clubs restaurant, which offers a very healthy menu with all kinds of local vegetables and fruits. If you are visiting Durban, you should definitely give it a try. But besides the food, the restaurant has another big advantage. From its balcony, you have an awesome view of the promenade and the beach right next to it. It was the perfect place in the morning to enjoy the rising sun and watch the surfers catching their waves.

Quite funny was, that every time a surfer reached the beach, he got out of the water, sprinted to the end of the pier and jumped back into the ocean, to save himself the exhausting swim. The fun fact is, that this was actually banned by a sign in front of the pier, but since we were in Africa nobody really cared. Of course, I had to capture this scene and therefore set up my camera in advance, so I just had to press the shutter as the next surfer got out of the water.
