Anchoring Downtown

Hello out there,

As I was planning for another trip to the Netherlands and decided to visit Rotterdam this time, I had one specific scene in my mind I definitely wanted to capture. But it took me almost the whole day to find and capture what I was looking for. Since you have seen the photo above, you can probably already guess, what I’m talking about.

For me, Rotterdam stands like no other city for global trading. With its gigantic harbor, where dozens of huge cargo ships enter and leave every day, it just seems like whole Europe is supplied by this place. Therefore, of course, my aim was to capture one of these cargo ships with the city in the background.

But soon after I arrived, I had to realize, that it would not be as easy as I thought to capture the image I had in mind. Since the overseas port, where all the big ships anchor, is pretty far outside the city, I was not able to get both of them in one shot. Therefore I headed back into the city and spend some time discovering downtown instead. As it was getting dark, I walked over the Erasmus bridge to get some nice shots of the skyline from the other side of the river. On top of the bridge, I then saw some cargo ships anchoring further down the stream. Of course, I didn’t want to miss this opportunity and headed over there. As I arrived, the last light of the day was almost gone and therefore I had to hurry up, to get the shot. But since I already knew, what kind of picture I was looking for, it did not take too long to find the perfect composition. So I just had to set up the camera and press the shutter.
