Stranded Artifact

Hello out there,

Waking up to the sound of the ocean is probably the most pleasant way to start a new day. Therefore I decided to spend the last night of my trip through Sri Lanka in a neat little hotel directly at the beach. Its location within the town of Negombo made it furthermore very convenient to catch my flight back home in the late afternoon since it is just a half an hour taxi ride. So I had almost the whole day to enjoy the sun, the ocean, and the beach.

But before I could go over to laying down in the sand, I wanted to capture one of the traditional fishing boats in a photograph.  I had read that they are very common around Negombo and therefore I kept this on my to-do list until the end of the trip. So after getting out of bed, I started searching for one along the beach. Instinctively I walked in the northern direction, which turned out to be a good idea, since I found quite a lot of them offshore, already in action. But since they were still pretty far away, it wasn’t worth getting the camera out and photographing them.

Luckily, one of the boats did not go out onto the ocean this morning and was still laying on the beach. Of course, I got my camera out and immediately had a photo in my mind I wanted to capture. Since the sky in the west was pretty colorful, due to the ongoing sunrise in the east, I got in front of the boat and framed it with the ocean in the background. Then I just had to press the shutter.
