Southern Bench

Hello out there,

The Cape of Good Hope is probably on about everybody’s itinerary traveling to Cape Town in South Africa. The one day journey from the city to the end of a peninsula is a wonderful scenic drive and for this reason alone, everybody should do it. But many visitors actually drive by the official Cape of Good Hope and visit Cape Point instead, without even knowing it. Including myself. First at least, for a simple reason.

When following the road to the parking lot at the end of the peninsula, you can see right in front of you a lighthouse on a high cliff, with a path leading up to it. Of course, many people instinctively hike up the path to the lighthouse, thinking this would be the Cape of Good Hope, and even more, people just follow the crowd. So did we. And it is worth it. From the lighthouse, you have a beautiful view over the peninsula, the ocean and across the bay to the mainland.

After we spend some time on top, which later turned out to be Cape Point, we started to hike back down to the parking lot. Since the path was on the south side of the cliff, we had the whole time the ocean right in front of us. At a rest area beside the path, we stopped for a short break. Here we suddenly realized, that the cliff we were currently on could not be the Cape of Good Hope, since right in front of us was another cliff, even further south. So we decided to drive over there later on and check it out. It turned out, that we were correct. But before we left the rest area, I had to get out my camera, to capture a photo of this phenomenal landscape. After enjoying the view for quite a while, I knew exactly, who I wanted to capture it and therefore just had to press the shutter.
