Mountain Gate

Hello out there,

It really was a magical morning in a remote lodge in the Drakensberg on my trip through South Africa. Of course, I had seen rainbows before, but the setting has never been so perfect.

On my way from Durban to Johannesburg, I spend two days to go hiking in the Drakensberg. Overnight I stayed in a lodge near a famous rock formation, called Amphitheater. The lodge was perfectly located on a cliff facing the mountains. Of course, I expected some great photo opportunities during sunrise and therefore set the alarm really early.

But the next morning the sky was covered with some heavy clouds, which mostly hid the mountain front. Pretty frustrated that my high expectations were not met, I decided to take a short hike to the valley below the cliff. Unfortunately, it started to rain. While looking for shelter under some trees, suddenly some rays of sunlight hit me. The sun, still pretty low in the sky due to the early hour, found a gap in the clouds and lighted up the area around me. I don’t even recall why, but I looked up into the sky and saw probably the most perfect rainbow I had ever seen. For a moment I just stared at this magnificent scenery. Then I stepped out into the rain and walked away from the trees, turned around and captured this shot. Just a great memory of this experience, which always takes me back.
