Discover the stories behind my photographs, captured around the world in magnificent landscapes and foreign cultures

Drift Past

Hello out there,

Probably there is no better way to discover such a magnificent landscape as Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam, than standing on the rail of a ship and just let it go by. Therefore did I decided to book a three day, instead of the usual two day cruises through the bay, to suck in as much of it as I could and the traditional junks are the perfect means of transportation for that.

Since they are relatively small and only carry around a dozen passengers, everybody has a cabin with a clear view from the side of the ship. This way, you can sit all day in front of the cabin and just enjoy an unparalleled natural spectacle, when an uncountable number of small overgrown island pass by right in front of you.

Of course, did I always have my camera ready to shoot a photo straight ahead, as another one of the highly photogenic sceneries came up. But I also wanted to capture the feeling of standing at the railing and to look out into the bay. So I decided to include parts of the ship in my photograph and changed to a wide angle lens. This way, I managed to include into the shot the railing as a leading line, as well as the islands on the left and the door to my cabin on the right. With having everything set up, I just had to press the shutter.
